Adelaide Town Hall

The Adelaide Town Hall, which lies opposite the Post office, was designed by Edmund Wright and Edward Woods. Construction began in 1863 and was completed in 1866. Like The Adelaide Post Office it was done in The Italian Renaissance-style. The tower was named after Prince Albert but the clock wasn’t installed untill 1936 just in time for the centenary celebrations.

If you remember in my last post the tower in the post office was named after Queen Victoria and at the time of their courtship Prince Albert and Victoria were viewed as one of the great love matches in history, so it seems only fitting that they watch over our city.

As you walk past the town hall and under the grand arches you can only wonder at the grand times people must have had in those days. Even so the hall is probably most famous for when the Beatles appeared on the balcony in 1963 in front of their biggest crowd ever, a whopping 300,000 screaming fans.

Now it can be booked for functions and my brother-in-law actually had his wedding reception there. You can book it by ringing (+61) 8 8203 7590 or sending an e-mail to townhall@adelaidecitycouncil.com
