St. Augustine’s Church Salisbury

The St. Augustine’s Chapel in Salisbury is a heritage listed building that was completed in 1857. Surprisingly building commenced in 1851 when the foundation stone was laid but it face a few problems and construction was delayed because of the Victorian Gold Rush. I reckon a whole lot of people decided they would try their fortunes intestate for awhile. It seems that it wasn’t the luckiest project as both the architect Walter Hunter and the builder Peter Walsh died within the first year.

This is a picture taken from the rear of the church, and I reckon that the crosses look very Gothic. I also thought it strange that there was two of them.

The front of the church is also rather unique in that the tower is similar to that of a small castle.

I once attended a wedding in this chapel and it was very beautiful inside. Unfortunately there was no information displayed anywhere in regards to hiring it out so I am not sure if it is still used for weddings and such.

This Roman Catholic church can be found on Commercial Road Salisbury, next to the newer St. Augustine’s Church and school.

Poetry In Adelaide’s Hurtle Square

Who said that there was no poetry in Adelaide? To prove them wrong I searched high and low until I found a beautiful piece of poetry right in Hurtle Square. Of all places it was placed on a pigeon drinking fountain.

Pigeon Drinking Fountain

Yeah, I know that it’s a little hard to see, so let me recite it for you.

Address To The Pigeons In Hurtle Square

The pigeons in the square
Are pert and debonair.
Plumped out with scattered scraps.
They cease to fear mishaps, Accost me as I walk,
With wheedling salesman’s talk.
And when I don’t provide
They jostle me aside.
Security we know
Is mortals chiefest foe,
And Shakespeare’s warning words
Embrace both men and birds.
They end who this defy
Cat’s lunch or pigeon pie.
So fly, bludging crew,
And don’t shit on my shoe.

Not bad huh, we Aussies can display the word shit in public.
