A Tribute To The Kaurna People
I’ve walked along North Tce on many an occasion but I’ve always failed to notice this tribute to the Kaurna people, one of the Aboriginal tribes of Australia.
The thing is that you can’t see it from the road and have to go down the stairs towards the Hyatt. Even then you will not see it unless you turn around. There are two plaques that say about the art work;
These works tell a story built upon other stories most notably that of TJILBRUKE a KAURNA ancestor.
The name YERRAKARTARTA means ‘without design’ or ‘at random’
YERRAKARTARTA how far do we isolate and unravel and what is measured?
The other plaque reads;
KAURNA YERTA NATTA ATTO NANGA YAKKO ATTO BUKKI NAKKI
This artwork is a tribute to the KAURNA people who are and have been part of this country since time immemorial understanding and observing the immutable laws that bind all things.

Thank you so much for sending me to Adelaide again. Your photos are excellent and conjured up old memories. It was 30 years ago I last walked those grounds and I know changes have been dramatic. I believe the Kaurna Memorial was not there then or I would have been aware of it.
I discovered Aboriginal art whilst in Adelaide and it has become a dominant force in my life, leading me to other genres of Tribal Art. Upon retirement from my job as a writer, my wife and I opened a gallery on Sanibel, FL that offered tribal art, including that by now notable Aboriginal artists.
Yep, a lot has happened over the 30 years, Adelaide even as two AFL footbal teams now, the Adelaide Crows and Port Power who are an offshoot from Port Adelaide.
