Poetry In Adelaide’s Hurtle Square

Who said that there was no poetry in Adelaide? To prove them wrong I searched high and low until I found a beautiful piece of poetry right in Hurtle Square. Of all places it was placed on a pigeon drinking fountain.

Pigeon Drinking Fountain

Yeah, I know that it’s a little hard to see, so let me recite it for you.

Address To The Pigeons In Hurtle Square

The pigeons in the square
Are pert and debonair.
Plumped out with scattered scraps.
They cease to fear mishaps, Accost me as I walk,
With wheedling salesman’s talk.
And when I don’t provide
They jostle me aside.
Security we know
Is mortals chiefest foe,
And Shakespeare’s warning words
Embrace both men and birds.
They end who this defy
Cat’s lunch or pigeon pie.
So fly, bludging crew,
And don’t shit on my shoe.

Not bad huh, we Aussies can display the word shit in public.

The FlexSqueeze Theme gives my blog that professional look and as you can see is great for photo blogs. I loved it so much that I bought the developers license. It's the easiest most customizable theme I've come across. See how easy it is to change your theme's appearance! Compare it to Thesis to see how much better it is! I am so thrilled with this theme that I highly recommend you to get your FlexSqueeze theme today!

The Rundle Mall Balls Meeting Place For Young And Old

Adelaide’s Rundle Mall, home of over 600 retailers, is definitely the shopping hub of the State. These Stainless Steel Balls are centrally located and is definitely one of the preferred meeting places of young and old alike. The balls stand 4m tall and were commissioned by the Hindmarsh Building Society and donated to the City of Adelaide in 1977.

The sculptor, Bert Flugelman, decided to place them one above the other as if in a precarious balancing act and it is not unusual to see tourists having their photo taken in front of them.

We pretty well owe a lot to one man and that man is Colonel William Light, who just happened to be the bloke who designed our beautiful city of Adelaide. Adelaide also owes his location to him. To learn more of this great man I suggest you have a look at the ‘History Of SA‘ website. This statue was originally located in Victoria Square and was moved to it’s present location on Montefiore Hill in 1938.

And in case you are wondering what he is pointing at:

One day I will have to take some night shots so that I can post them here for you guys to see.

Adelaide’s Very Own Chinatown

Small though it may be, Adelaide hosts it’s very own China Town complete with Pogoda Style Roofs and Red Lanterns. It’s really quite impressive when you stand at either of the entrances, for there are two, and I always love the feeling of awe as I walk under the pergoda style arches under the watchful eyes of the marble lions.

Although once you step into Chinatown you are not completely transferred to a traditional Chinese town, the many Chinese stores are a welcome change from traditional Adelaide. Don’t get me wrong, I love Adelaide and it’s places like Chinatown that give it a character of it’s own.

China Town

Located on Moonta St it has two pairs of Imperial guardian lions donated by the People’s Republic of China guarding the entrances at Grote and Gouger Streets.

Chinese restaurants, grocery stores and markets make up the majority of our Chinatown and small though it may be it adds a bit of character to our delightful city.

The Roma Mitchell Law Court Building

I like this particular view of the Roma Mitchell Law Court Building which sits on 3 Angas St. at the end of Victoria Square. At a cost of $96 million it was designed by Mariano Deuonni of Hassell LTD. It houses the Federal, Family and Federal Magistrates courts and will accommodate the High Court on those occasions that it comes down to South Australia.
