City Of Churches Archives

This truly beautiful Catholic Cathedral stands on the corner of Wakefield Street, to the east of Victoria Square. It wasn’t completed until 140 years after the laying of the foundation stone, and at the time of this photo was undergoing some upgrading.

St. Francis Xavier Church Adelaide

One of the few churches that has its very own home page complete with worship details, history and news letter etc.

St. Patrick’s Church In Grote Street Adelaide

St. Patrick’s Church has a special place in my heart because that was where I committed my life to my beautiful wife. After the original church, that was located in West Terrace, got to be too small for the congregation it was decided to build a new one on Grote St. The occasion was so popular that when they were laying the foundation stone for the present church in 1912 there were 10,000 people present.

Today it still stands out amongst the other buildings and it’s most likely one of the main reasons we chose this stunning church as the place for our wedding. We were probably one of the last ones that were able to use it for free.

St.Patrick's

The basic floor plan is that of a ‘basilica’ that dated back to 4th century Rome. The organ at St. Patrick’s, built by William Dodd in 1900, originally resided at the Hindmarsh Square Congregational Church, but when that church closed they purchased it for St. Patrick’s and it is there to this day.

When we were married there some 20 year ago, heck you can’t expect me to remember the exact year, I’m a bloke remember? Anyway in those days we just had to slip the priest some cash but now I think there is some cash involved for use of the church, which is understandable considering what would be involved in the upkeep of this beautiful building.

After all, as the wedding is one of the most important events in a persons life, at least for the woman, why wouldn’t you want to hold it in beautiful surroundings such as you will find at St. Patrick’s Church!

St Lawrence’s Priory North Adleaide

I went to my cousins wedding on Saturday and they had it at the St Laurence’s Priory in North Adelaide. As you can see by the picture it is a beautiful church. The original foundation stone was laid in 1899 by the Dominican priesthood.

I’ve driven past this lovely church quite a few times, but fortunately on this day I was able to go in. It was a really lovey Church and I would have got some shots of its interior but the wife swiped the camera.

Oh well, at least I managed to get a photo of the Church itself.

St. Laurence's Priory

Not only that I also managed to take some shots of the grooms hire car. Why? Because it was a Ferrari thats why!

Red Ferrari 360 Modena

In case you don’t recognize it, it’s a Ferrari 360 Modena which has a 3.6L 400 hp V8, and the roar of the engine was music to my ears. In case you are interested in Mass times etc. then simply follow this link.

St Andrews Uniting Church

St. Andrews Uniting Church can be found on Jetty Rd. at picturesque Glenelg. Every time I walk past this church I am spell bound by its simple beauty.

St. Andrew's Church

For a very concise history of this beautiful church, you could no better than going to the St. Andrew’s By The Sea site which is extremely easy to navigate and has a whole heap of relevant information including services. As of yet their ‘gallery’ link does not seem to be working so you will have to make do with my photos for now. :cool2_tb:

Adelaide The City Of Churches

While it is true that Adelaide is known as the “City Of Churches”, and that we do have a lot of churches, the reason for the name is because of our history as a free settlers state, one which allowed all religions and ethnic groups. For that reason Adelaide has a variety of temples, churches and synagogues. We were also the only state never to have convicts and probably our only mistake was that we were the first state to allow women the right to vote. :D

I thought it only fitting to have a category just for the various more picturesque churches. Where best to start than St. Peter’s Cathedral which is located on the corner of King William Rd and Pennington Tce. North Adelaide. Although the foundation stone was laid on St’ Peter’s Day 29th June 1869 it wasn’t completed until 1901.

St Peter's Cathedral Adelaide

As an Anglican church of note is was built in the Gothic style and almost reminds one of the Notre Dame of Paris. It really looks quite spectacular at night and I will try to post a night shot as soon as I take one. ;)
