Pilgrim Uniting Church In The Heart Of Adelaide

The Pilgrim Uniting Church can be found right in the City of Adelaide. It is a beautiful church that seems to be dwarfed by the buildings around it. Construction of the church began in 1865 and was completed in 1867. The builders, Brown and Thompson worked from plans designed by the architect Robert George Thomas who just happened to win the design competition that was held in 1864.

The Pilgrim Uniting Church even has their own web page that is full of useful information including service times, link to a google map so that you can find it and you can even make it your home page. All that and a PR3, now that is what I call pretty good going.

Festa Di Madonna Di Montevergine Is Upon Us

Awhile back I did a post on The Feast Of The Madonna Di Montevergine describing what it is all about and how it happens every year on the last day of September. Well it’s that time again and this year it falls on the 28th of September. Even though that post didn’t generate many comments it did get quite a lot of ‘hits’ and so I got the idea to do a followup post listing the upcoming events starting on Monday the 22nd.

Monday 7.30pm Mary Font of Light and Life. An evening of prayer for vocations.
Tuesday 7.30pm Mary New Woman. An evening of prayer for our families
Wednesday 7.30pm Mary Servant Of Our Lord. An evening for our children and young adults. (English/Italian Liturgy) with distribution of Blessed Medals.
Thursday 7.30pm Mary Mother Of Mercy. An evening of prayer and anointing for our sick and elderly.
Friday 7.30pm Mary Woman Of The Hour. An evening of special prayers for our deceased and Procession of the Holy Cross.
Saturday, 6.00 pm Parish Vigil Mass (English). 26th Sunday Of Ordinary Time. Year “A”

Sunday Feast Day

9.00am Recital of the Holy Rosary in the Church of the Annunciation, Hectorville, led by the prayer group “Rosario Vivente”.
9.20am Procession from the Hectorville Church via Montacute Road, Newton Road and Graves Street. All Religious Associations are kindly invited to participate. Parents are encouraged to bring their daughters, dressed in white.
10.30am CON-CELEBRATED SOLEMN HOLY MASS by Padre D. Riccardo Luca Guariglia OSB accompanied by the choir San Francesco.
12.00 noon The Dame of Montevergine will prepare a lunch for everybody; proceeds will be donated to charities.
1.00pm Concert by the GUISEPPE VERDI BAND
3.30PM Popular local singers.
4.00pm Holy Rosary and Benediction, followed by family Mass
5.00pm Monteverdi Singers
6.00pm Elite Accordian Group
7.30pm Musical extravaganza: JOEY FIMMANO’S ITALIAN DELIGHT
10.00pm Fireworks

And the fireworks bring the festivities of the day to an end.

There is a lot happening after the Holy Mass icluding a lot of stalls offering Italian specialty foods such as Zeppoles, pasta, cakes and other delecacies. There is also a Souvenir stand offering many religious items and souevenirs including DVDs of the previous Festa which you can recognize by the following image.

They will retail for $15 per DVD and it’s the first time the Festa has been captured on DVD. The image of the Madonna was superimposed on the Large Copper Doors of the Church itself.

The Rundle Mall Balls Meeting Place For Young And Old

Adelaide’s Rundle Mall, home of over 600 retailers, is definitely the shopping hub of the State. These Stainless Steel Balls are centrally located and is definitely one of the preferred meeting places of young and old alike.The balls stand 4m tall and were commissioned by the Hindmarsh Building Society and donated to the City of Adelaide in 1977.

The sculptor, Bert Flugelman, decided to place them one above the other as if in a precarious balancing act and it is not unusual to see tourists having their photo taken in front of them.

St Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Church

This rather impressive building can be found at 27 Saints Rd, Salisbury Plain. A relatively new building, the St Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Church’s foundation stone was blessed by ‘His Eminence The Arch Bishop Of Australia Stylianos’ on the 15th Of January 1989.

Pelicans Congregating At American River

I took this shot while I was at American River which is located on Kangaroo Island. I was actually surprised to see the black swan there. While it was quite awhile ago, the only thing that I remember about American River was the peace and tranquility of the place and the fact that there wasn’t much to eat there except fish and chips.

Apart from the pelicans and swans American River is teeming with other bird life including the ibis and the rare glossy black cockatoo. Because there is so much other wildlife in the area you, more likely that not, may even see some wallabies, possums and echidnas roaming around.

If you are heading that way perhaps you would like to stay at the Golden Chain Motels where I hear that the restaurant serves a whole lot more than just fish-n-chips!

Tabor Lutheran Church In Tanunda Barossa Valley

Tanunda is a picturesque town found in beautiful Barossa Valley, South Australias premier wine district. Located only 70km from Adelaide it is well worth the trip out. Most people that visit the area love to take the winery tour where they can taste some of the best wines in Australia.

The Tabor Lutheran Church located on Murray Street (the main street of town) is really quite remarkable. You will notice an orb on the top of the 26 meter spire and it is said that the orb actually holds some old church records. The church dates back from 1849 and as you can see from the photo, it has quite a bit of character.

Raindrops On A Bird Of Paradise Leaf

I reckon this shot would fit in nicely in the ‘raindrops’ series. It’s actually a closeup of a bird of paradise leaf which I took just after it had rained. What I found unusual was that one half was in focus while the other half was crystal clear, so much so you could almost see the individual cells in the leaf.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church Hindmarsh

This church is probably the first church that I came into contact with as it was in this church that I was baptized. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church can be found at 252 Grange Rd, Hindmarsh and it is really quite an impressive building.
