Aussie’s Love Affair With Beer

Australian blokes have many things on their mind, but the two things that occupy it most are women and beer. The bloke in this picture uses Aussie ingenuity to put this little beer carrying invention together.

Then there is this stall keeper at the Glenelg markets who is appealing to the Aussie’s sense of humor by having a small “Beer And Bullshit” section at his stall. I reckon he got the attention of a fair few tourists as well.

Beer and Bullshit

I will have some more great shots of Glenelg, an Adelaide’s beach side resort in future posts.

Just to finish off here is a taste of one of our finest beer commercials, Tooheys.

Oh, did I mention that the commercial was banned. I don’t know why.

The Clipsal 500 Adelaide 2008

Adelaide has been known to host some very popular events and one of them is right around the corner. I’m talking about Clipsal 500 Adelaide 2008 which will run from 21st of Feb – 24 Feb. Adelaide is well known for putting on some great shows and even today people still rave about the times when we used to host the Grand Prix.

The Clipsal 500 has it all, from beautiful girls,

Adelaide Oval

There are many who regard the Adelaide Oval as the most picturesque Test cricket ground in the world and it certainly has a lot of character. You can read all about it’s history at SACA History.

Crowds At Adelaide Oval 1

On this particular occasion I went to see Adelaide United play soccer against Sydney FC. I must admit that we have been playing pretty crappy of late, that and the fact that the umpiring was pretty crappy led to an Adelaide loss. No big deal as long as the Crows do well this year, and even there I have my doubts as we have lost a lot of good players.

Crowds At Adelaide oval 2

As you can see quite a lot of spectators turned out for the match and all in all the atmosphere led to everyone having a pretty good night of it. On the way back to the car I took this shot of the city from across the River Torrens.

The Adelaide Town Hall

Adelaide Town Hall

The Adelaide Town Hall, which lies opposite the Post office, was designed by Edmund Wright and Edward Woods. Construction began in 1863 and was completed in 1866. Like The Adelaide Post Office it was done in The Italian Renaissance-style. The tower was named after Prince Albert but the clock wasn’t installed untill 1936 just in time for the centenary celebrations.

If you remember in my last post the tower in the post office was named after Queen Victoria and at the time of their courtship Prince Albert and Victoria were viewed as one of the great love matches in history, so it seems only fitting that they watch over our city.

Adelaide Town Hall

As you walk past the town hall and under the grand arches you can only wonder at the grand times people must have had in those days. Even so the hall is probably most famous for when the Beatles appeared on the balcony in 1963 in front of their biggest crowd ever, a whopping 300,000 screaming fans.

Now it can be booked for functions and my brother-in-law actually had his wedding reception there. You can book it by ringing (+61) 8 8203 7590 or sending an e-mail to townhall@adelaidecitycouncil.com

Welcome To Scenic Adelaide

Adelaide Post Office

This is a shot of the Adelaide Post Office taken from just left of Victoria Square. I love the old architecture of this building. The Post Office was completed in 1872 and the tower, which was named the Victoria Tower, was just over 50 meters and at the time was said to be the highest in Australia. Just to the right you will notice the smaller tower of the Adelaide Town Hall, but I will do a separate post on this later.

I thought that the statue of the head above some of the windows and the main entrance a nice touch.
