Martini Restaurant Norwood

Last night we decided to dine out and as is our want to try out new places to eat we decide on Martini Ristorante which is located on 59A The Parade Norwood SA 5076. Upon waking into the restaurant I thought it had a really nice atmosphere especially with the presence of a lovely wood oven, which I thought would lend to some really traditional cooking, especially the pizza. Nothing better than a tasty wood oven pizza.

Unfortunately we were directed to another room which apart from the bar was really very drab looking. As we sat down we couldn’t but help notice all the noisy chatter, especially from one table of revelers. The noise was such that it really spoiled out dining experience, completely different from Chianti which I reviewed on my Chianti Classico Restaurant Adelaide, A Great Experience post. Perhaps management should consider doing something to that room that would absorb the noise as well as lift the atmosphere of the place.

Martini is obviously and Italian restaurant, and being of Italian background I was looking forward to a lovely meal.

Matini Ristorante

As an entree I decided on the Gnocchi al Ragu, a house made gnocchi with tender veal pieces in tonato ragu. Although this was really a main I asked for it as an entree and I have to admit it was absolutely divine. The gnocchi dumplings were absolutely divine, definitely the best I’ve ever had, so light and fluffy I’m sure the only thing stopping them from floating off the plate was the sauce and tender veal pieces, both of which only added to the a very tasty entree.

For my main I chose the Risotto alla boscaiola with portobello & porcini mushrooms, sage, barolo wine & baby spinach. Those of you who follow my reviews would know that I love my risotto, unfortunately this one, as far as I was concerned,  was below par. Although the rice was cooked to perfection the dish just wasn’t very flavorsome. It definitely could have done with a little more salt but considering the ingredients I was expecting more. I let my wife sample some of it and she thought it was alright but sorry I can have alright at home, when paying for a meal I want something more.

Speaking of the wife, she had the Pappardelle con Anatra, a flat wide ribbon pasta served with slow cooked duck and field mushroom ragu. Now that was something that looked really tasty and so I had to sample me some and it was as tasty as it looked. After speaking to the others that were dining with us it seemed that I was the only one whose dish was left wanting. Oh well, c’est la vie.

By that time the noise had become intolerable and after telling the waitress we would love to stay for dessert but we couldn’t eat with all the noise around us she has us moved to the front of the restaurant. Much better, and not longer after the move we noticed another table from the ‘noise’ room were right behind our heals. Seems we weren’t the only ones that found the noise level intolerable.

For dessert I had the Bombaloni di banana, a banana & chocolate beignet with vanilla custard. This consisted of four tasty balls that were of a cinnamon donut consistency and texture, with a chocolate center, each surrounded by a little vanilla custard. Don’t know where the banana came in. Overall it was passable. The wife had the Crème Brulèe, a vanilla crème brulée served with house made almond biscotti which was quite tasty.

Apart from the risotto and the noise the only other disappointment was the service. Although the staff was very friendly they just were not around often enough. There were times when we needed drinks and no-one was around to ask. I also think that the it took way too long for the main to come out. We sat down at about 7.30pm and we weren’t served the main till after 10.  Other than that it would have been a very enjoyable evening.

Church of the Annunciation – Hectorville

I first mentioned the Catholic Church at Hectorville way back when I wrote the post on The Feast Of The Madonna Di Montevergine. Known as the Church Of Annunciation it’s located at 20 Montacute Rd, Hectorville, 5073 Australia.

This church was built in 1962 and replaced the original church that was built in 1863. I sure would have liked to see what that church looked like. Still this one has a unique look about it and the interior has some beautiful lead lighting. One of windows is 40 feet high and tells the story of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Christ’s Passion.

Why My Next Eyeglasses Will Be From Zenni Optical

I’ve been wearing glasses for over thirty years now but I needed them for a lot longer than that, ever since I was about seven. In those days they used to do check your eyesight at school and although I knew I needed them I hated the idea of having to wear glasses, probably because I didn’t want to be teased anymore than I already was, being called four eyes and all. The way I got around not having to get glasses was to memorize the chart so that I could recite it from memory.

The thing is that glasses in those days were pretty damn ugly and if not ugly they were boring to the extreme. Not these days, nope eyeglasses now are really cool but if you’re not careful you could pay way more than you have to. What most people don’t realize is that once you have your prescription from your optometrist you can use it to buy your glasses online and in doing so save a whole heap of money.

Probably one of the most popular online sites would have to be Zenni Optical and there would be several reason for their popularity and why you should consider using them.

    • Their website is easy to use
    • They have a wide selection of eyeglasses
    • Their prices are surprisingly low
    • Even the cheapest glasses come with free Anti-Scratch Coating, full UV protection as well as glass case and cleaning cloth.

They even do international orders and I think they only charge around $10 for shipping. Honestly, I think that the next time I need to get new glasses I will definitely be giving Zenni Optical a go.

On the weekend the wife and I drove down to Port Hughes, a small coastal town in the Copper Coast region of South Australia. It’s just past Moonta on The Yorke Peninsula. The tourists like coming here because of the safe swimming and for the fishing. I must admit not many people were catching fish on the jetty while I was there although some were catching crabs and squids.

Still, this post isn’t about Port Hughes it’s more about something I saw while driving up there. It looked like a large version of the Tin Man from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was just sitting there in this huge paddock, unfortunately I was going way to fast to stop for a photo. I did notice though some other sculptures on the other side of road and made a mental note to stop for photos on the way back.

So, coming back from Port Hughes, traveling on Port Wakefield road I say these three sculptures in the following order. First there was Ned Kelly and there was a sign in front of it which said Yesterday Ned Kelly, Today John Olsen. There’s also a barrel with the label Toxic on it.

Then there’s one of what looks to be an angry rat dressed in office clothes carrying a briefcase which has stuff about contaminated waste on it.

Finally there was one of a flying saucer complete with alien pilot.

    saucer

That one had Lost In Waste painted on it which I thought was pretty good at the time. All three seemed to have waste as a common theme so I presume the sculptor has a thing for people ruining this beautiful world of ours, which we all should. Anyway, if you’re heading down Port Wakefield road you may want to keep and eye out for these guys. Oh, in case you’re interested I changed the clouds in that last photo using photoshop and you can see the results of that on Photos2Blog.

    The Maylands Church Of Christ

I love churches because their architecture is wide and varied. Although it doesn’t look it the Maylands Church of Christ has been around for just over 100 years. In fact I think it had it’s 100 year anniversary only last year.

Found on the busy Portrush Rd you wouldn’t have thought that 100 years ago it was surrounded by orchards and market gardens. And yet there is sits today in the midst of all these house. I must admit that it does stand out, what with the turret type tower which has it’s names boldly printed on it with large white letters. The cross fixed boldly in the midst of the tower for all to see, shouting out to all that this building belongs to the followers of Christ.

There is one thing about these older buildings and that’s even though they didn’t have the technology we have today they still knew how to build them to last. I’m not sure if the more modern structures will stand the test of time.
